Without a Time Limit
The Game
Without a Time Limit is a single player experience created in Unreal Tournament 3. It investigates what the possibility of limitless deaths have on an avatar's life within the virtual realm.
Players navigate through three themed levels in UT3, and experience the avatar's life through interwoven machinima experiences created in the Sims 2.
The game was created over the course of a month and a half for a student course, The Visual Story. We had to base our concept around a theme of death.
My Role
I was the lead level designer on the project. I created all of the kismet sequences which included the cinematic system, the death sequence system, and all of the movers that occured in-world. I also was responsible for porting the videos into the game (BINK video). I also designed the hub world, implemented the game's music, and designed several gameplay sequences (enemy encounters, puzzles, etc).
What I Learned
I learned how to create levels within Unreal 3, how to program kismet sequences, and how to marry gameplay with narration using two conflicting engines. Upon the inception of the project, I had no level-building experience, nor had I used Unreal 3. It was ambitious, and I learned how to present a single player experience successfully, despite hearing from several sources that it was impossible given our time-frame.
I also learned invaluable managing skills, as I helped other level designers work within the engine.
